You can take the boy out of the country but you cannot take the culture out of the boy. The country: Taiwan, the boy: Malan Breton. Take one look at Breton’s self-titled line, and you can see his Asian roots exposed through his style. Breton’s line is composed mainly of silk, combining this rare fabric with colors such as red, yellow, and navy his clothing almost shines as it is being modeled down the runway.
Malan Breton has a unique sense of style. If you look at traditional Taiwanese clothing you will see where he gets his inspiration from. Breton’s line shows off the feminine figure in a subtle yet sexy way. Strong necklines and asymmetrical cuts, Breton emphasizes the natural beauty of the womanly shape. Many of his pieces use thick waist belts that elongate the legs, providing a more lean and elegant look. This inspiration comes from the band that Taiwanese women wore around their waist over their zhanpao, a long robe. The colors come from the rich culture of the Taiwanese. They are known for their beautiful silk fabrics in an array of bright colors that represent happiness and harmony. Breton also incorporates the modern black twist into the mix, making for an exquisite, eye catching show.
Recently, Breton has introduced his men‘s line. The clothing looks very much like something he would wear on a daily basis. The slick business look, a blazer, button up, and slacks. On many occasions Breton adds color into his own wardrobe and translated that into the look of his new spring line for men.
Aside from his fashion line, Breton has been involved in the entertainment and fashion industry for many years. He started designing at the age of 11, learning from costume mistresses in Taiwan. But his career took a turn into the entertainment industry. He used to model and has been photographed by big name photographers such as Len Prince, Hype Williams, Thom Oliphant, and Joseph Kahn.
Breton also studied theatre at Circle in the Square, a local theatre in New York, and performed on Broadway at the Henry Millers Theatre. As well as theatre, Breton also danced behind dancer turned singer-songwriter, Paula Abdul before becoming the promo voice for ESPN Extreme Sports and ABC Sports.
However, none of this was Breton’s passion. Above all, he had a love for bringing his fashion creations to life. He has dressed stars such as Michael Buble, Kylie Minogue, Nikki Blonsky, and Minnie Drive along with a slew of other celebrities. Breton’s collections have been featured in magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, ELLE, Rolling Stone, and New York Magazine, just to name a few. He also has his own fashion column the popular magazine OK! Magazine.
Not only has he done everything under the sun, but he is also an active philanthropist. He supports Care and Share India, an organization that educates over 6,000 children below the poverty level in Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh, INDIA). Another organization he donates his time to is amFAR, the America Foundation for AIDS Research.
This leaves people to wonder, “What’s next for Malan Breton?” A better question, is there anything left for Malan Breton to do, short of taking over the world?
