Picasso to Warhol: Fourteen Modern Masters

The co-founder of the Cubist movement, the creator of mind-boggling mobile sculptures, and an artist who had a knack for developing bold color images are just a few characteristics of the fourteen artists included in the Picasso to Warhol exhibit. The display is co-organized by the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and the Museum Of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

Viewing the Picasso to Warhol exhibit is a rather breath-taking experience. Each of the fourteen artists included in the exhibit are unique in their own special way, from their artwork to their background stories. Even the strategy used to place each artist and their work in its own individual section, suits them accordingly.

Alexander Calder has his own quaint section among the other artists, it includes a mobile wire sculpture called “Spider.” The sculpture is made out of painted sheet aluminum, steel rod and steel wire. Calder is well known for inventing mobile sculptures. His first art studio was housed in the cellar of his family home and he acquired art materials such as copper by finding them on the street.

Of course you couldn’t create a phenomenal exhibit celebrating the works of 20th century artists without including the Legendary Andy Warhol. You can spot Warhol’s area at the museum a mile away; it entails a display of Campbell Soup cans. The artists created the design by using a silk screen method back in 1962. Warhol’s thought-provoking 1966 self portrait creation is also included in his display.
The artwork of these artists alone is appealing to the eye, it peaks your interest and it leaves you wanting more. You can venture from one room to the next comparing and contrasting the works of the artists and even find out why they still have a strong influence on aspiring artists today. There are about 100 works of art included in the Picasso to Warhol series.

“From Picasso and Matisse to the reinventions of Pollock, Johns and Warhol, this exhibition will offer our visitors a personal encounter with the modern masters unlike any exhibition in the past,” said Michael E. Shapiro, the High’s Nancy and Holcombe T. Green, Jr. Director, in a press release. “These artists ushered in new ways of thinking that forever transformed the artistic landscapes of Europe and the U.S. and reinvented the very idea of art. Our visitors will see the High Museum of Art/”Picasso to Warhol” from The Museum of Modern Art, New York development of each artist’s signature style and the works considered to be among their best, giving the residents of our city, state and region a unique opportunity to experience the historic foundations of modern art.”

The artists included in the exhibit are Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Constantin Brancusi, Jackson Pollock, Fernand Léger, Romare Bearden, Alexander Calder, Louise Bourgeois, Giorgio de Chirico, Marcel Duchamp, Joan Miró and Piet Mondrian.
Picasso to Warhol is one part of a multi-exhibit stemming from a partnership with MoMA and the High Museum of Art that began in 2009. The exhibit will be on display from Oct. 15-April 29. After “Picasso to Warhol,” another large-scale exhibit is in the making for the museum in 2012 and 2013. For more information: www.high.org
