Seal: A Man Of Soulful Words

As long as I have been alive Seal has been making great music. Two decades is the length of Seal’s outstanding music career. Classic, emotional, and romantic; that is what Seal is all about and what he expresses through his vocals.

When people first see Seal, they wonder why he has scars on his face. The scars on his face are the result of Discoid Lupus Erythematosus, a type of lupus that affects the skin and leaves a butterfly shaped scar. He was diagnosed as a child but has since been in remission.   

The soft spoken singer was born Seal Henry Olusegun Olumide Adeola Samuel. His mother is Nigerian and his father Brazilian. His name Olusegun means “God is victorious.” He was born in Nigeria and moved to England with his family when he was an infant.

Before he hit fame, Seal graduated with an architectural degree. He sought after odd jobs while he was in living in London, which included designing leather clothes and electrical engineering. He even posted advertisements for prostitutes and call girls in telephone boxes to make extra money, which landed him in some trouble with the police. In the 80s he toured Japan with a British punk band called Push.

Even though Seal is considered to be a R&B Casanova, his early career began in the dance/pop scene in the early 90s. He has roots in the Britain’s house and rave scene. By the mid 90s he developed his sound; a fusion of soul, folk, pop, dance and rock.

Seal’s claim to fame surfaced when he collaborated with dance music producer Adamski on the number one hit “Killer” in 1990. This led to him signing with record label ZTT and his first self-titled album “Seal,” was released. The album sold millions worldwide. He finally made it to fame. But fame came at a price. He became overwhelmed and suffered from panic attacks.

“If you’re a sensitive person, like myself, you quickly realize that not everybody’s intentions are genuine. And, yes, you have more people around you, lots more people around you, but your space becomes much smaller,” the singer said in an interview with thebiographychannel.co.uk.    

At this time Seal actually had dread locks. But he shaved them to create a new look for himself. Not just physically but musically too. He released his second album, also entitled “Seal” in 1994. This album was less upbeat than his first and filled with more emotion. In his album he shared with his fans his near death experiences. He suffered from pneumonia twice and was involved in a car accident.

Apart from being a successful musician, Seal is also a father and husband to supermodel Heidi Klum. Their unconventional love story started in 2004, when Klum was pregnant from her partner Flavio Briatore. Seal and Klum married in 2005. To add to their love story Seal wrote a song for his wife called “Wedding Day.” The two sang this song together at the 2007 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. “Family, my wife and children, that’s my reason for being,” Seal said in an interview with People. “I am finally in a content and happy place to the point where I feel like I need to sing about it.”     

They are most definitely Hollywood’s perfect couple. They always dress up together in outrageous costumes for Halloween. At her annual party in New York the couple decided to wear matching ape costumes.

Seal’s successes just keep on coming. He has high and low points in his life but he is finally at a place where he is happy. He has a supermodel for a wife, beautiful children and an extremely successful music career that continues to get better. Seal won’t be going anywhere for a long time.
