RocNation Artist Bridget Kelly is becoming more of a familiar face in the music world. You might remember her from back in 2011 when she collaborated with R&B singer, Frank Ocean in their summer time hit “Thinking Bout You.” Her latest single has brought her back on the R&B scene, ready to show the world her true talents in a special delivery.
The R&B singer has served as an on-stage fill-in for Alicia Keys by performing “Empire State of Mind” with Jay Z at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2009. She has also performed on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross. BK is currently working on her debut with artists such as Estelle; working with producers, Jerry Wonda, Shea Taylor, Eric Bellinger, and James Fauntleroy. BK has also worked with Grammy Award winning music producer, Eric Hudson. Hudson has recently worked with singers, Trey Songz, Justin Beiber, Tank and rap artist, Rick Ross. “We had a whole year of working with producers and experimenting,” says BK.
Her latest single, ‘Special Delivery,’ has attracted many fans that are experiencing heartbreaks. In the song, BK writes a letter to her soon-to-be-ex-boyfriend telling him that her love has expired. BK explains her concept of the visuals in her Special Delivery music video, “I think the idea of “Special Delivery” the song, is really just showcasing the disconnect in a relationship. It doesn’t necessarily have to be that he’s cheating or that I’m cheating or that I hate him now, or whatever the case is. I wanted to showcase the ideas of me going back and forth confused deciding whether or not I’m gonna leave him, whether or not I’m gonna write the letter.”
The 26-year old has an interesting “come up” story just like many other artists but with a city twist. Born and raised in the city where they say everyone’s dreams will come true, (New York), BK was constantly surrounded by the auras of fashion, theatre, art and music. Growing up in a household where music was heavenly praised, BK got the opportunity to get in tact with her artistic side at an early age. “When I was about 3-years old, I would watch movies with my parents and the Sound Of Music was the first time I really discovered music. I remember the following Christmas, I got up on a chair and sang Christmas carols at the top of my lungs” says BK as she reminisces.
Bridget Kelly attended LaGuardia High School, a specialized public performing arts school in New York City. The is the same school that Rap Artist, Nicki Minaj, Actor Omar Epps and many other famous artists. BK tells us about her high school experiences. “LaGuardia was an experience! It was an art school, so creative people like myself constantly surrounded me and it broadened my perspective tremendously. I grew to appreciate every other art form including my own. I was given the opportunity to write songs, and perform them for my peers. That experience swayed me completely.”
In 2006, a mutual friend introduced her to her management team, which began her journey to stardom. By 2008, rap artist, Sean “Jay Z” Carter signed her to his RocNation label after years of hard work. BK performed at open mic shows, clubs around NYC and even subway platforms. It was seriously a dream come true. BK explains to Cocacure Magazine how Jay Z’s early acknowledgement of her potential sparked her first few moments of stardom. “I’ve been signed to Jay for about a year when he asked me to do the 9/11 show in Madison Square Garden. At the time it was only supposed to be a one-time thing, like show up real quick and sing in the background and then disappear, and then it generated so much attention and press, so then he was like ‘cool, you’re killing it so
you’re gonna go on the road with me.’ One-time turned into a year of touring across Europe and Japan…it was great.” BK claims her ultimate mission is to be the voice for her fans who want to escape the chaos in the world.” I like to be honest in my music and about how I feel. It’s not always right and it’s not always fashionable or popular, but it’s how I feel. I really want to be a voice for people who want to escape from the norm..” said BK in an interview with SFPL Magazine. This is only the beginning to BK’s autobiography about her success story. She will continue to share her voice with the world as she tours all over the world. Keep up with life of BK by following her on twitter @theycallmeBK. Her album is expected to drop early this year. Stay tuned!
