Sybrina Fulton: A Mother’s Impact

The worst nightmare of any parent is the thought of losing their child. But, for Sybrina Fulton, this wasn’t just a nightmare, it was her reality. In 2012, her unarmed 17-year-old son, Trayvon Martin, was shot and killed by 28-year-old George Zimmerman. Zimmerman wasn’t arrested for the shooting until two entire months later, and he was still acquitted a little over a year later by using Florida’s “Stand Your Ground,” law as his defense.

Ryan Kaji: The King of YouTube Kids

He may not exactly be well known by most adults, but one would be hard-pressed to find a bigger star of YouTube Kids. This eight-year-old makes unboxing and toy review videos, and he was the highest-earning YouTuber of 2019, according to Forbes Magazine. He beat out Markiplier, PewDiePie, and Jeffree Star, two gaming YouTubers, and a beauty YouTuber, who make up some of the highest earners on the platform. He raked in a total of $26 million last year, out the second-place earner, Dude Perfect, a sports and comedy channel, by $6 million.

Alabama Shakes: On The Record

This alternative rock band from Alabama that sounds more like an old school soul group is turning heads with their soulful-rock mix debut album Boys and Girls. Alabama Shakes is taking the music world by storm with their experimental styles and their magnetic stage presence. Like many musical groups, Alabama Shakes began back in high school when one band member, Brittany Howard (lead singer).

Ozlem Thompson: An Alien Approach

Before art movements like Dada, which sought out to completely destroy traditional art values, and Fauvism, which used scientific color theory to emphasize emotional responses over-literal interpreted scenes; art was a tool to understand and simplify the world at large. Eventually, art was put aside and considered its own study, completely removed from academia. Istanbul artist Ozlem Thompson remarried the fields with her organic, contemporary paintings.
