For centuries, painters have created portraits to present important figures of history. But Otis Quaicoe is modernizing portraits in his own creative aspect. He originally grew up in a large city in Ghana located in West Africa. His journey with art started at a young age when he became inspired by the designs of movie posters, which were hand-painted. This early inspiration became his drive to become a painter.

The Power of Retrospective

A couple in a convertible facing the horizon.

A band of young trumpeters crossing the road.

A girl and a man walking toward a foggy footpath.

These are only brief descriptions of scenes captured by the magnum photographer Elliot Erwitt, and I was fortunate to observe some of his work this week at the Jackson Fine Art gallery on a Thursday morning, in Midtown, Atlanta.

There’s a scientific law that dictates that says structure and order cannot be created by chaos. This law has been used quite a bit as proof of there being a higher power, and to disprove the Big Bang Theory. In art, chaos can be an essential part of the beauty seen in a particular project, or an artist’s preferred style. Italian contemporary pop artist, Antonio Murgia, lives and works by this creed.

Which comes first when telling a story: the character or the narrative? For the artist and painter Katherine Fraser, it all starts with a facial expression–a visage from which worlds bloom from the viewers’ imagination. Her vast collection of oil paintings pushes viewers to reflect and wonder. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the artist used her abilities to give people a sense of community during isolation with her collection and virtual show, "Alone Together.”

One of life’s greatest pleasures lies in its simplicity.

Waking up to a gorgeous sunrise, hues of orange and yellow mixing together to glow over the horizon, while the sun’s rays seem to dance like shadows on the ground; laying on your bed, gazing out of the window, allowing the body to simply exist as you take in another breath of air.

These priceless moments are the framework from which Lori Saint Rome draws inspiration. Her artwork centers around humanity and nature,  illustrating just how colorful and simple everyday activities can be.
