Art has a unique way of teaching us about the world we live in, while also serving as a way to document the state of the world for future generations. There are different types of art designed to do just that, while catering to your different senses and emotions. Music and poetry play to the emotions of the audience while allowing them to create an image in their own minds. Visual art like paintings, sculptures, and movies takes viewers on a journey that they’re able to experience with the creator.

At an art festival, it’s likely that you’ll get a good mix of multiple types of art. At La Biennale di Venezia (The Venice Biennial), one of the most prestigious in modern history, you get all of that and then some.

Art is often inspired by the personal experiences of the artist. Their work serves to address political, or social concepts, as artists tend to immerse themselves in current events and issues relevant to the time. Native Detroit artist Christopher Batten does just that. His background in martial arts allows him to analyze fighting through a closer lens. With abstract painting techniques, he explores the phenomena of violence and the moments of peace that exist within fighting. He believes that we all function in life as combatants who fight for, or against something, and he uses that belief thematically throughout his work.

Having a shared interest with your parents is something that you truly appreciate the older you get. As a parent, it’s really cool to see how my oldest daughter is such a good writer. While my youngest daughter has taken to my love for spelling, she’s the youngest student that will be representing her school in the district-wide spelling bee for primary school-aged children.
