When I first saw the prosthetic limbs created by Sophie De Oliveira Barata, I was taken aback by arms and legs that looked far different from the standard, mechanical look of artificial body parts. However, my shock instantly morphed into a fascination for her out-of-the-ordinary designs, one being of an arm that was made into a vibrant, blooming flower vine and a leg made of cherry wood with a fully-functional cuckoo clock in the knee. Barata beautifully illustrates a side of prosthetic limbs many of us didn't even know existed, a side that is artistic and completely expressive of the individual wearing it.

Atlanta has been one of the most thriving cities in America for quite some time. It’s the spot for go-getters;  entrepreneurs, musicians, real estate gurus, and the list goes on and on. Having already been a major player in the music and literary art scene, the city also completes the trifecta by being a major player in visual art as well. The MINT Gallery is one of the staples of their visual art scene.

A soccer ball is kicked through San Francisco, Calif. A beard touches a surface. Trash on San Francisco’s streets is picked up, cleaned, then carefully placed right back where it once lay.

Through these actions Chris Sollars expresses himself. He creates experimental art that leads to as much commentary as it creates.

“The street and the immediate space around me influences my ideas directly,” Sollars told Juxtapoz.

The Indianapolis, Indiana-born artist moved to Rhode Island where he received his BFA in Sculpture from Rhode Island School of Design. He later got his MFA in Sculpture from Bard College Milton Avery Graduate School. Now, San Francisco is his playground and he finds the vast differences between the coasts inspiring.

Think back to the last time you were in a doctor’s office. Did you see any medical illustrations or anatomical diagrams? Were the figures shown white and male? Odds are, they were, as this is the norm embodied in health textbooks and on medical posters. These images are wholly outdated and do not offer anywhere near an accurate representation of the diverse population. Medical student Chidiebere Ibe has made it his goal to transform the white world of medical illustrations.

In Max Hemphill’s photography, humanity screams in subtle vibrancies that illustrate the details and rawness of his subjects. His captivating and sharp-edged photos of people and earthly endeavors encompass components of human nature that the human eye can fail to recognize in passing.

Unbounded depictions of his subjects create an element of freshness and tranquility in a current world condition where so much chaos and movement run our lives. It is as if we can feel the breath and warmth of the people we are looking at. These photographs are intimate, safe, and wildly meaningful through emotional displays of power, freedom, and authentic joy.

If you’ve recently been around Atlanta, Georgia, and visited the Hartsfield Jackson Airport, wandered around downtown, or found yourself at the Woodruff Arts Center, your gaze has probably been met by beautiful art pieces showcased on towering billboards, digital signs, and shining displays. Art can be found anywhere throughout Atlanta, but these locations in particular have recently been decorated with pieces from the 6XTOne exhibition. Held from Jan.1 through Jan. 5, 6XTOne was a city-wide art exhibition created to celebrate the inauguration of Atlanta’s 61st Mayor, Andre Dickens, and showcases the beautiful work of 61 Atlanta-based artists. Mayor Dickens is a strong advocate of the arts in Atlanta and even insisted the exhibition take place during his inauguration. This celebration is yet one of his many initiatives to preserve the art and support the many artists who reside in Atlanta.
