“We thought we were, like, the black Mumford and Sons.” “Yeah, Mumford and Sisters.” That’s how twins Alexandria “Zandy” and Alexis “Lexi” Fitzgerald describe their band’s early sound, an earthy blend of folk and soul. Joined by their older brother Darius and their cousin Jasmine Mullen, they formed the Nashville-based group called The New Respects.

Entertainers and their clothes have always been a hot topic, particularly musicians. I think back to Prince being one of the greatest musicians of all time and his knack for wearing purple and shoes with a heel. Growing up as a Dipset fanatic, one of my favorite pictures is of the Rapper Cam’ron when he rocked the pink fur coat and pink fur hat  with his pink cell phone to his ear, a diamond chain on his neck and on his rings sending viewers into a trance. Sometimes the fashion choices are coincidental, but in their cases it was always intentional. They knew they were at the height of their respective genres, and that their influence was second to none. They took full advantage of that influence and if you don’t believe me? Out in the street, they call her Koffee, and she’s the evolution of contemporary reggae music. The self-described sing-jay-guitarist (singer, deejay, and guitarist) can be described as old school roots reggae meets the new generation, mixing elements of rap and dancehall to create her own unique sound and socially aware message.

The girl who used to make up songs with her mom in the car. The one girl who won “Most Creative,” as a High School superlative. That girl who dropped out of college to pursue her passions. That girl who independently produced three EPs and one full length album. That girl who currently has over two million monthly listeners on Spotify. That girl is Yung Baby Tate, a 23 year-old musician, writer, and producer.
