Róisín Pierce: O’ Lovely Lace

There’s this misunderstanding that femininity is equal to docility, in other words: be quiet, listen and attend to the needs of others, and never want for more. 

Yet the hauntingly bridal visages that Róisín Pierce has put on the runway gives female rage and revolt a whole new face. The delicate interweaving of silk, lace, Irish crochet, bridal veils, florals, ribbons, and bows all create fashion pieces that reinterpret designs that are seen as traditionally feminine. All thanks to one designer working out of her house in Dublin with her diligent mother, Angela.

Anthony Akinbola: Bridging Identity Through Art

Nigerian-American artist Anthony Akinbola’s 2018 exhibition at the Queens Museum in New York, titled ‘CAMOUFLAGE,’ took the art world by storm with beautiful canvases painted with colorful durags, a popular Black hair product and accessory. ‘CAMOUFLAGE,’ like the rest of Akinbola’s work, abandons traditional conventions of art and encourages spectators to consider the intersections between culture and politics present in his own identity, the art world, and society as a whole.

Shenseea: Blurring Dancehall and Pop

Kingston, Jamaican songwriter/vocalist Shenseea blurs the line between dancehall and pop to create songs with uniquely effervescent energy through the incorporation of reggae, rap, and R&B music styles. Having grown up listening to Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Céline Dion and the Isley Brothers, and looking up to her idols Nicki Minaj and Rihanna, Shenseea focuses on using her music to touch listeners and inspire them to proudly embrace their roots.

Sara Willadsen: Reimagining The Space Around Us

When most people pass by a construction site, they don’t give the scene a second thought and quickly go on with their day, but for artist Sara Willadsen, these sites are beautiful scenes that bring new life to areas. In her painting, “Rebuilding,” Willadsen depicts the rebuilding of an old home, showcasing the different layers that go into construction while highlighting the intricate relationship that exists between the different stages of the building process. The painting starts off with a sketch of the home, on top of that is the beginning of a wooden frame, and on top of that is an image of cranes lifting more beams up to create the final product.

Keith Powers: From Pretty to “Uglies”

Models and actors are constantly in the public eye shaping the media we consume and, ever so slowly, the opinions of the society we live in. Although Keith Powers may fit into conventional beauty standards, his career has taken him to roles that sometimes challenge the status quo.

He was raised in Sacramento, California, played football at Sheldon high school, and graduated in 2010. By the age of 17, he had already launched his modeling career by signing with Wilhelmina—a world-famous modeling agency—and moving from Sacramento to Los Angeles.

Jacob Collier:  A Musical Prodigy

Nobody goes to a six-time Grammy award winner’s concert expecting that they will be performing too. But if you find yourself with tickets for a Jacob Collier show, you better warm up your vocal chords. 

Collier is famous for what he calls “Audience Choirs,” one of which took place at 2023’s Glastonbury Festival in Somerset, England.  Collier first divided the crowds into sections, and then expertly blended together 30,000 amateur audience voices into a stunning vocal harmony –the  set was an exemplification of his sage-like musical wisdom and ability.
