Bad Bunny: Puerto Rican first, superstar second

For Americans, Latin music, over the past decade, just charged into the mainstream. With booming bass, suave swing, and lilting Spanish lyrics, Latin music has begun to dazzle American listeners, thrusting new artists into the global spotlight.

Today, there seems to be one name that is synonymous with Spanish-language music: Bad Bunny.

Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, the 31-year-old Puerto Rican artist, was first discovered in 2016 after DJ Luian – a Puerto Rican record producer and songwriter – listened to Martínez’s song “Diles.” Martínez, who created and released music on SoundCloud under the moniker of “Bad Bunny,” was signed to Hear This Music.
