Often times we see artists who fit their genre to a T,  but others can traverse outside of their set style and take up various sounds at once. The South African band BLK JKS can not be pinned down to just one genre, as they capture the mixed sounds of punk, rock, African soul, and jazz in their impressive discography. After a 12-year-long hiatus, the band has returned with their highly-anticipated sophomore album, “Abantu/ About Humans.”

Sometimes all it takes is hearing an artist sing about their struggles to make someone else feel like their issues are valid. Fashion met charity earlier this month with luxury streetwear brand Burghàlie teaming up with local Atlanta foster care organization Atlanta Angels. Burghàlie handpicked 10 designers to feature in a fashion showcase and silent auction fundraiser. The event took place at the incredible ​​Biltmore Ballrooms, one of Atlanta's premier event venues, on Sunday, March 13th. 

The Florida-found fashion brand, Burghàlie was created by Rashaad Smith and Brandon Jones in 2017 to unite people through fashion and art regardless of race or sexuality. Burghàlie initially started as a service-based organization at Florida State University with a crew of models, photographers, and designers who hosted fashion shows and gave back to their community.

You can find a certain beauty in traditional art when the artist's emotions are revealed through elements of their culture and simplicity. People who are often charmed by new art forms and styles may tend to lose sight of the no-frills, calming beauty that comes with traditional work. Modern artists of today can sometimes seem more concerned with creating something unique than something with which they relate to. Passed down through generations, traditional artwork provides us with an insight into the values, cultural practices, and belief systems ingrained in these art forms. And an opportunity to see the human condition in its rawest form.

Think back to the last time you were in a doctor’s office. Did you see any medical illustrations or anatomical diagrams? Were the figures shown white and male? Odds are, they were, as this is the norm embodied in health textbooks and on medical posters. These images are wholly outdated and do not offer anywhere near an accurate representation of the diverse population. Medical student Chidiebere Ibe has made it his goal to transform the white world of medical illustrations.
