Think back to the last time you were in a doctor’s office. Did you see any medical illustrations or anatomical diagrams? Were the figures shown white and male? Odds are, they were, as this is the norm embodied in health textbooks and on medical posters. These images are wholly outdated and do not offer anywhere near an accurate representation of the diverse population. Unbounded depictions of his subjects create an element of freshness and tranquility in a current world condition where so much chaos and movement run our lives. It is as if we can feel the breath and warmth of the people we are looking at. These photographs are intimate, safe, and wildly meaningful through emotional displays of power, freedom, and authentic joy.
If you’ve recently been around Atlanta, Georgia, and visited the Hartsfield Jackson Airport, wandered around downtown, or found yourself at the Woodruff Arts Center, your gaze has probably been met by beautiful art pieces showcased on towering billboards, digital signs, and shining displays. Art can be found anywhere throughout Atlanta, but these locations in particular have recently been decorated with pieces from the6XTOne exhibition. Held from Jan.1 through Jan. 5, 6XTOne was a city-wide art exhibition created to celebrate the inauguration of Atlanta’s 61st Mayor, Andre Dickens, and showcases the beautiful work of 61 Atlanta-based artists. Mayor Dickens is a strong advocate of the arts in Atlanta and even insisted the exhibition take place during his inauguration. This celebration is yet one of his many initiatives to preserve the art and support the many artists who reside in Atlanta.
What do you get with communal vision, creative appetite, and a love for art? A movement. A social movement that cohesively showcases Black culture, variations of current artists, and a space to empower and honor their work.
In 2019, Joshua Dingle created The Spectacular Black Girl Art Show, a series of exhibitions that began in Atlanta annually, yet since has grown in esteem nationwide throughout cities such as Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Austin, Chicago, Nashville, and New York City.
Dabs and Myla are described as a dynamic duo of artists. Originally from Melbourne, Australia the couple moved to Los Angeles, California in 2009 to take their careers to the next level. What separates this team from other artist groups is that this duo is actually a couple in love. They describe themselves as “two crazy, work-a-holic, mad dorks in a pod,” and believe that working together has only brought them closer.
Originally from England, Porreca was born to two artists. Her mother, a tombstone sculptor, and her father, a classical musician encouraged the youngster to pursue art. Growing up around the world (Saudi Arabia, Pennsylvania, and Abu Dhabi, just to name a few), the artist made a home in San Francisco for 15 years. She just recently moved to Los Angeles where she has her own art studio, but Porreca is ready to head back to the Bay with her first solo show.
