Juneteenth is approaching and celebrations are underway in the city of Atlanta. Everyone has their own unique way of recognizing the historic and purposeful holiday. Celebration can come in many different forms and earlier this month, The Self Liberated Fine Art Exhibition served as a reflective, penetrating and purposeful reminder of why we gather to celebrate not only our ancestors, but each other.

Glass is considered one of the most exciting and most dynamic art forms in Australia. It’s capability to transform endlessly is one of the reasons why The Tom Malone Prize is awarded each year to a skilled Australian glass artist. It’s been 18 years since its inception and each year its winners receive $11,652 for demonstrating their ability to reinvent and challenge themselves by finding new ways to distill human experience in accessible and enlivening ways. Mel Douglas was able to sweep the stage twice by winning this prestigious award both in 2014 and most recently in 2020.

When I think of  Jordans or J’s, almost immediately a picture of the classic Air Jordan 1’s pops up in my head, and also the thought of how I can get my hands on a pair of them. Most people can agree that a nice pair of fresh Jordans; with no creases can definitely uplift anyone's mood. When the words ‘art’ and ‘jordans’ show up in the same sentence, it now becomes a little harder to entertain the thought. Brooklyn-based artist Michael Murphy has figured out how to perfectly blend the two together in a way that emphasizes the viewer's perspective; depending on where they are standing in the room.
