Research has proven that art has therapeutic, healing, and unitary effects on individuals, specifically those with trauma and PTSD (see this fascinating article on Healthline). Art is utilized in rehabilitation centers and public schools alike as a method of allowing human beings to channel their emotions in a positive manner with tangible outcomes. For artist Ernest Shaw Jr., the inspiration for his work stems from the desire to unite entire communities through this shared emotional catharsis.
Since I was 15 years old and first transitioning to my natural hair, I’ve been dying to attend AFROPUNK ATL; as a high school sophomore Iwas mesmerized by exhaustive photos of eclectic fashions, big, colorful, natural afros, and an overall beautiful collection of people that, for once, made me feel normal for wearing black lipstick and combat boots in the summer.
Art is loved because of its multifaceted, multidimensional properties. It connects different types of people and allows them to share different experiences and perspectives. While it can be found almost anywhere, art is a major part of Atlanta’s creative scene. Last month the city was the location for an event that included several art installations called FLUX: Ponce City Market.
The first image on luxury-brand social media manager Candace Marie Stewart’s website is of her clothed in all-white with cowrie shells threaded into her elaborately coiffed braids. There are a regal quality and quiet repose to the way she carries herself which complements her eclectic street-style. Her appearance is bold, striking, and dignified, which seems only natural for someone who has masterminded unique social media campaigns for the luxury department store Barney’s New York and Italian luxury brand Prada.
In the age of the Amazon Kindle, the Barnes and Noble Nook, and a host of other e-readers that have taken the literary scene by storm, many Americans have chosen to forgo physical books and opt for a sleeker, more environmentally friendly choice. However, for everyone toting a slim reading tablet in their backpack or purse, there’s still someone out there with a hard copy of their favorite novel in hand -- and a lot of those someones can be found at A Cappella Books, located in Northeast Atlanta. If you live in the city’s Little Five Points neighborhood, you don’t need to go too far to get your independent bookshop fix.
Models, draped beautifully with flowy fabric, stood still to the point that they appeared as statues and blended with the vibrant scenery. It felt like I had been transported to a whimsical garden, filled with flowers and greenery, and hazy smoke. The details spoke to me, from an ornately designed patterned coat to the floral accents placed on the models hands, and their dewey, dream-like makeup. To me this exhibition emulated gods and goddesses of the spring, with models lounging about and caressing their elegant tulle gowns. Art Meso managed to capture not only my attention, but also my imagination, allowing my sense of childlike wonder to resurface.
