Sophie De Oliveira Barata: The Alternative Limb Project
When I first saw the prosthetic limbs created by Sophie De Oliveira Barata, I was taken aback by arms and legs that looked far different from the standard, mechanical look of artificial body parts. However, my shock instantly morphed into a fascination for her out-of-the-ordinary designs, one being of an arm that was made into a vibrant, blooming flower vine and a leg made of cherry wood with a fully-functional cuckoo clock in the knee. Barata beautifully illustrates a side of prosthetic limbs many of us didn't even know existed, a side that is artistic and completely expressive of the individual wearing it.
