Entering into the entertainment world at an extremely young age can be overwhelming and downright intimidating. The bright lights, the constant speed of the music-making and the temptations that come with being inside of the music world can drastically change anyone’s personality, sometimes for the worst. Becoming a music manager at the early age of 18 was something that was deemed almost impossible, especially in the 70s. Yeah, the entertainment business is nerve-wrecking, but it helps to have someone you trust alongside you, especially a family member or close friend. With Sharon Osbourne, the woman known for television appearances, music managing, promoting and even as an author, she was able to make her dream a reality by following in her father’s footsteps and enduring the pains that come with her job.
Brixton, a small town inside of London, England, is where Sharon Arden (her given name) became interested in music during her childhood. This, of course, was expected because of the influence of her father, Don Arden, who was the manager of Black Sabbath, an English rock band that formed in 1968 and defined the genre of heavy metal music. At the age of eighteen, and fresh out of school, she met her future husband, the internationally acclaimed rockstar and lead singer of Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne through her dad. Shortly after meeting, she became the new manager and promoter for Ozzy’s band and drove them to success. It can be argued that the only reason the daughter of Don Arden was able to achieve so much promise at a young age was because of Don Arden himself. While that can be taken into account, it’s no doubt that Osbourne has reached an amazing status through her own doing over the past few decades.
The 80s and 90s were when Osbourne became a well-rounded person, indulging in several musical opportunities at once. However, at this time, Ozzy still overshadowed her with his latest albums and media appearances. But she did gain success through her business, Sharon Osbourne Management, her own music management company. Throughout the years, she had managed to sign on stars like Lita Ford, a British rock guitarist, the English rock band Motorhead, and Gary Moore, a well-known Irish singer. Her company began really well, but once she started to co-manage a band named Cube, her success began looking limited. However, now it is noted that if you win on X Factor, you will win an opportunity to book a deal with Osbourne and her company – the chance of a lifetime. Sharon Osbourne Management is now something on the back burner for the 62 year old artist, but her company still produces an array of talented individuals.
By the early 2000s, Osbourne co-starred on MTV’s reality show, The Osbournes. It was the first reality tv show that she appeared on, but it wouldn’t be the last. From 2002 to 2005, the show continued airing, producing staggering tv ratings in Britain and the United States. Other than that, she had produced her own tv show, The Sharon Osbourne Show, which didn’t gain as much popularity as The Osbournes, but it still got her more face time on the big screen. From The X Factor, a reality music competition similar to American Idol, to the Paul O’Grady Show, a British comedy skit show, Osbourne has appeared on the television on a regular basis. America’s Got Talent, a talent show that featured singers, dancers, magicians and more, was an extremely popular show that she starred in as a judge, along with Howie Mandel and Howard Stern, during the first through third seasons. But I, personally, am able to recognize her from her appearance on the weekly airing of The Talk, a tv series that features five women talking about motherhood, feminine products and the latest headlines in the world’s news. As of late, Osbourne has shown herself on several awards shows, and even hosted an episode of WWE Monday Night Raw, an international wrestling and entertainment organization, with her husband. Emerging on the scene with her own reality tv show, she continued to appear on screen for the years to come.
Osbourne is sometimes considered to be overshadowed by her husband, Ozzy Osbourne, but I feel that she is her own person and with all of her credentials, she has the ability to stand in the spotlight right beside her man. Her constant tv and media appearances stand out because of the influence she has in female communities. She has also written autobiographies, describing her personal life in detail, leaving nothing for the reader to imagine. Her plate appears to be full at the moment, appearing on several tv shows and engaging with social media to make her presence known.
